Snapdragon 670, 640 and 460 – New Qualcomm Chipsets for Mid-range Phones Receive Official Specifications

Beyond the Snapdragon 845 reserved for the Galaxy S9 and other high-end phones, the offer of Qualcomm chipsets has remained largely a mystery. Fortunately, the year-end brings new information, leaving precious hints about the level of performance that buyers of mid-range and entry-level phones can expect.

According to information disclosed in the Weibo social networking site, the Snapdragon 670 will replace the 660 model from 2017, delivering increased performance and energy efficiency through the use of a 10nm manufacturing process. The new chipset offers a core-core CPU consisting of 4 Kryo 360 at 2 GHz cores and another 4 Kryo 385 at 1.6 GHz, the latter being optimized for low power consumption. The recipe is complemented by the Adreno 620 graphics core and the Spectra 260 ISP image processor capable of managing optical sensors up to 26MP in single camera mode or 13MP + 13MP in dual camera mode. Internet connectivity is provided with a 4G LTE X16 modem capable of reaching 1Gbps for download tasks and 150Mbps for upload.

The mid-range model, the Snapdragon 640, features a 2-core Kiao core processor at 2.15 GHz and another 6 Kryo 385 at 1.55 GHz, respectively the Adreno 610 series GPU. The internet connectivity is provided with a 4G LTE modem X12, capable of reaching 600Mbps for download tasks and 150Mbps for upload. The image processor is the same as the 660 chipset.

The entry-level smartphone version, Snapdragon 460, keeps the 14th manufacturing process, but improves power consumption with a less demanding octa-core CPU, consisting of 8 Kryo 360 cores, four operating at 1.7 GHz, and another four at 1.4 GHz. Another detail that will influence the performance level is cessation of processor cache, which directly addresses RAM. The Spectra 240 image processor limits photo resolution to 21MP in single-camera mode.

The first smartphone-powered models of the new chipsets are expected to launch in the first half of 2018.
